Swanton is a town in Franklin County, in the Islands & Farms region of northern Vermont. Within the town is located the village of Swanton, as well as most of the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge.

It is unknown how the town's name originated, however there are a few stories with suggested origins. One story suggests the town is named after Swanton, Kent. Another story says the name means "a swan's town," and Queen Elizabeth II did send a pair of Royal swans to Vermont's Swanton in honor of the bicentennial of the town's granting, however the name in Kent actually means "town of the swineherds." A third story says that the town was named for William Swanton, a British naval officer who, after retirement, established a shipyard in Bath, Maine which became famous for its custom-built ships.

A notable person from the area was Lucien B. Caswell, a Wisconsin congressman.
