Lowell

We Are
Vermont.

Lowell Vermont is the westernmost town in Orleans County, located in the beautiful and scenic Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, an area that National Geographic selected as part of their geotourism program for sustainable destinations. Lowell was chartered in 1787 by Governor Thomas Chittenden to John Kelley in 1787, for whom it was named Kellyvale. The name was changed to Lowell in 1831, but the origin of the name is unknown.

The asbestos mine in Lowell was of economic importance from the 1940s to the mid 80's. In the mid-1940s, the Belvidere mines produced more than 90% of all U.S. asbestos. It closed in 1992.

One notable person from Lowell was John C. Caldwell, a teacher, diplomat, and Civil War general.
