Franklin

We Are
Vermont.

Franklin is a town in Franklin County, of the Islands & Farms region.

The town was originally granted as Huntsburgh to Jonathan Hunt and five associates in 1789. Jonathan was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1794, and he was the last Lieutenant Governor of the Vermont Republic, before Vermont joined the United States as the 14th state, in 1791.

Town residents later voted to change the name to Franklin, hoping to be named the County Seat. Franklin County was named for Benjamin Franklin.

Some notable people from the area include: Orville E. Babcock, a Civil War general; Moses Ransom Doyon, a Mayor of Madison, Wisconsin; and Charles W. Gates, the 55th Governor of Vermont.
