2020 Foliage Season: Mid-stage to Late Color Abounds

By Vermont.com StaffOct. 8, 2020

October 8, 2020
"Mid-stage to late season color can be found throughout the state, with the valleys and lower elevations generally displaying shades of red, orange and yellow. We expect to see more fall foliage unfold near Lake Champlain and the Connecticut River over the next several days.

Heavy rains last week did cause the leaves to come down in some areas, but colorful foliage can still be found in many sections of the state. Keep checking back here as we continue to gather information from our "Leaf Squad" to report foliage conditions throughout the state!

Reports are typically updated weekly, on THURSDAYS.

Between reports, you can find some gorgeous Vermont Fall scenery in our Autumn Photo Gallery, thanks to local photographers and visitors to Vermont. But truly, you've got to be here to fully enjoy the leaves. And remember, it's never too late to plan a fall vacation in Vermont!

Foliage color generally starts to change in the higher, cooler areas, spreading down into the valleys, and moving from north to south across the state.

'Peak' colors can be found at many different times & places as the season progresses, and the timing varies from year to year, based on the weather.

Beyond leaf peeping, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Vermont’s mountains, meadows and villages during the fall. Smugglers Notch Resort - Foliage - 2020-10-04

"An impressive few weeks of foliage have yielded stunning, colorful views of the mountains from Smugglers’ Notch area. As we gear up to celebrate Indigenous People’s Day, the colors are on-point, with yellows, oranges, and reds abundantly showing throughout the mountain vistas.

Cooler temps are in the forecast, with the possibility for a few mountaintop snowflakes to provide a little bit of 'snowliage,' which is a welcome treat for photographers. We’ve been seeing lots of family portraits and roadside photography lately. It’s truly a beautiful time at Smuggs!"

-- Mike Chait, PR Director,
Smugglers' Notch Resort

October 5, 2020 in Burke, VT
Burke Area - Lake Willoughby Foliage - 10-05-20"We are past peak around Burke, but it is still pretty up here. Weather has been fairly warm making for good hiking and mountain biking."

-- Laura Malieswski,

CENTRAL VERMONT:

October 7, 2020 in Mendon, VT
Red Clover Inn - Foliage - 2020-10-07

"It's been great rainbow weather! This good luck sign appeared at the edge of our field, framing the foliage and the outdoor dining area. It's been a stunning fall so far here in the Killington Valley, with milder temps holding through this weekend. Warm sun, cool nights, and a dramatic sky make for a great time of year.

Drop in to the Red Clover for dining or drinks Thursday through Saturday night this week. Distanced indoor seating is available in multiple dining areas, and weather permitting we'll open up outdoor seating and fire up the bonfire. Reservations recommended."

-- Carol Ryan, Innkeeper,
Red Clover Inn & Restaurant

Basin Harbor - Foliage - 10-05-20

"Foliage is in full effect here in Vergennes, VT on Lake Champlain. Beautiful yellows, golds and oranges are bursting everywhere you look. Some trees are already beginning to lose their leaves. Nothing like fall to remind us that change is a good thing!"

-- Karina Petoe,
Basin Harbor

SOUTHERN VERMONT:

October 7, 2020 in Grafton, VT
Grafton Inn - Foliage - 10-07-20"We'd say we're past peak foliage at this point. Many trees are bare due to some recent rain and wind, though there are a few holdouts that haven't completely changed yet. Nevertheless, with moderate temperatures and a layer of color on the grounds, these early October days are still enjoyable!"

-- Ali Pierre,
The Grafton Inn

October 7, 2020 in Bondville, VT
Stratton - Foliage - 10-07-20

"We're enjoying peak foliage here at Southern Vermont's Highest Peak. Deep reds and oranges dominate the landscape from the golf course to the summit observation deck. Everywhere you turn you are engulfed by color.

Such vibrant colors couldn't have come at a better time as we gear up for Harvest Fest. Spend the long weekend strolling through the village checking out the Courtyard Sale. Or perhaps get those last laps in during the final weekend of operations for the Mountain Bike Park. As always, scenic gondola rides and hikes to the Fire Tower provide ample leaf peeping.

Be sure to visit our website for information about travel and lodging."

-- Luke Robins,
Stratton Mountain Resort

October 5, 2020 in Manchester, VT
Hampton Inn, Manchester - Foliage - 2020-10-05"It is the perfect time to visit Manchester, the cool sunny weather has brought out the jewel-toned foliage! The weather is pleasant for hiking and walking along trails, visiting local historic sites, or perusing shops and restaurants in town. Our patio is a perfect place to relax by the fire pit and gaze up at the colorful mountains after an eventful day. Book your stay today!"

-- Colleen Mullaney,
